As a practising interpreter or translator, membership of WAITI gives you a voice that is heard and respected by both government and industry. The people who represent you are elected by you from among your colleague interpreters and translators.

As a member of WAITI you will be informed of the latest issues concerning our industry, and will have the opportunity to provide input to policies and matters affecting our profession.

Membership Classes and Prerequisites

Membership CLASS

Member – MWAITI

For practitioners who are actively engaged in interpreting and/or translating and possess tertiary qualifications at Diploma level or higher in interpreting and/or translating and/or have a NAATI credential at Para-Professional or Provisional level or higher.

Member (National) – MWAITI

For practitioners who are actively engaged in interpreting and/or translating and possess tertiary qualifications at Diploma level or higher in interpreting and/or translating and/or have a NAATI credential at Para-Professional or Provisional level or higher, living more than 100 km outside the Perth greater metropolitan area. This class of membership is also available to interstate and overseas practitioners.

Fellow – FWAITI

For Members with at least ten years standing who are actively engaged in interpreting and/or translating and possess tertiary qualifications at Advanced Diploma level or higher in interpreting and/or translating and/or have a NAATI credential at Professional level or higher. This membership class also requires participation in PD offerings and contribution to committee/sub-committee work.

Life Member – LMWAITI

For Members with at least ten years standing who have given outstanding service to the profession and the Institute, have demonstrated professional excellence, and possess tertiary qualifications at Advanced Diploma level or higher in interpreting and/or translating and/or have a NAATI credential at Professional level or higher.

Student Member

For students enrolled in tertiary courses of translating and/or interpreting (Diploma or higher).

Provisional Member

For ‘unqualified’ practitioners who are unable to fulfill membership conditions due to a lack of formal training/education opportunities or NAATI credential in their language until formal training/education (or NAATI credential) is available.

Also available on merit for practitioners holding the NAATI credential of Recognition.
